What types of things does Richard "hunger" for
and what are the effects (positive and negative) of hunger?
Richard hungers for actual food, but he also hungers for security. Like you know how he used to hide food when he first moved to granny's wayyy back, because he was secretly scared that in the morning there would be no food left? Or how Richard gets a job to make sure he can afford to hang out with friends and do the activities that they do -which also include buying snacks at the store.
Richard hungers for power and control over his own life. Richard often rebels against those in authority. he wants to control his own life and he is sure that he knows best. Richard learns the art of rebellion and that it is the key to his freedom.
I think Richard hungers for knowledge, because i think subconciously, he knows that his life will be the same as those before and after him, indistinguishable from the thousands of other blacks living in his town/state and era unless he sets himself apart. I don't think that richard is completely aware of his hunger for knowlege though. If you asked him what he wants the most, i have a feeling that he wouldn't say knowledge.

You can also expand to your statement about Richard wanting security with how he wanted more acceptance from his family and friends. For example, whenever the Grandma approved of something Richard did, he was always secretly happy inside. Also, Richard would lie to his family about how he "quit" his jobs - rather than tell them the truth that he was fired - to keep them from getting angry at him. Great job.
Nadia, wow your thoughts were really deep! I liked it how you mentioned that Richard hungers for security in his life, I noticed that a lot too. I think it was good insight to say how much he hungers for knowledge because when i read the book I noticed how intelligent Richard was, and how he worked hard at school. But I think it was really good how you brought up that Richard is not always aware of what he hungers for.
I agree with you and your thoughts on what Richard has a hunger for in his life. The thing I thought that Richard had the most hunger for was knowledge. =]
